21/10/2006 Entry: "More camera's on the way."

The next faze of the governments 'lets get those pesky motorists for every penny they have' is to commence with the roll-out of traffic cameras to catch motorists blocking box junctions or ignoring road signs, they already have these camera's in London and last year issued 1 million (yes, thats 1 million) fines in a city of just 7 million people...assuming that, and i don't know for sure, that the fines are of the same pay structure as other speed camera fines then the minimum you pay with early payment will be £30...hmmmm that means that London on it's own managed to raise about £210,000,000 last year in tax..er, sorry...fines.
It's outrageous that they are going after motorist's with such venom yet can't protect the general public from far more serious crimes like murder/mugging/armed theft etc with the release of these vermin onto our streets with tags or early release.
You know what would be awesome, if everyone gave up driving cars for a year as a protest......the revenue fall-off from camera fines and fuel tax/car tax would cripple the government and probably bankrupt it.....how about that for a protest. (yes i know it would never happen...they know it as well...have us over a barrel good and proper)

Afraid its the old English stiff upper lip mate. We will all moan about it, but no-one will do anything to combat it. If the same thing happened in Paris the cameras would be attacked on a daily basis.

Being devils advocate here but why should it matter how many cameras there are and what they are watching for? If you speed, enter box junctions when there's no clear exit, or ignore road signs then it's your own fault. Can't blame the government for your mistakes.

I've learnt my lesson now after being caught speeding three times. Bought myself a sensible car and don't speed at all anymore.

However I hate the way they are forcing people into that with the threats of large fines and increased insurance costs. They should educate people instead except obviously that wouldn't work if people knew they could get away with it. So what to do....

I agree with you to a certain extent Matt but i think far to much emphasis is being placed on expensive camera's to watch our every mood and not enough police on the job doing what they used to do.
Instead of persecuting someone who strays into a 'yellow box' in the road with a £40k camera, why don't they track down and prosecute the many many thousands of people with no car tax/insurance/license, the many thousands of people who steal cars or from cars etc.
Will you still feel the same when they start sticking camera's up at T junctions to catch people who don't stop at the white line before moving into the flow of traffic?
