30/08/2005 Entry: "Owen set to sign for Newcastle"

The first words to utter from my mouth on the news that Micheal Owen will sign for Newcastle were something to the effect of 'Oh for fucks sake, your having a laugh aren't you!!!'(pardon my french)
Apparently the deal is all but done and unless Liverpool come in with a deal in the last hour before the transfer window closes tomorrow then Newcastle will get themselves one of the top strikers in Europe.
I can't tell you how annoyed i am that Rafa didn't do more to get him, all this crap about ' i need a centre back and a winger' rubbish is fine and good if you have a team of goalscoring forwards but our strikers are inconsistent to say the least, in Owen you have a 20 a season man who scares the defence just as much as Cisse with his speed but has a far better finishing ability and first touch.
I understand why we have the strikers we have, we have the speed in Cisse....but he don't like balls to his feet, he likes to run onto them which means through balls all the time instead of a passing game at the front...and he also strikes me as being a bit lazy at times when he's not got the ball. We've got Nando and Crouch so that Rafa can exploit long ball games, Crouch is injured and so yet to make an impact and Nando still hasn't fully settled (and i wonder whether he ever will) and youngsters Pongolle and Mellor..who have talent but not enough experience.
As they say, you don't win games with defenders, you win games with strikers...and i hope our inconsistent forwards can pull it together this season or the Super Cup will be the only silverware this year.

Your also forgetting Morrientes, who is starting to hit form, and was top scorer at Real Madrid a few seasons ago. Crouch will (I dare say) net a few when he returns to fitness. Cisse has the speed of Owen to scare the defense. So really although it would have been nice to see boy wonder back at Anfield, he would be excess to requirements at the moment. Besides, he left Real because he wasnt getting enough first team football, which in turn was affecting his game at international level. Had Raffa brought him back to Anfield, he risked loosing Cisse for the same reason.

Besides, from what i understand Owens agent has managed to include in his Newcastle deal a buy out clause after one season specifically because the boy is hoping to impress Raffa enough at Newcastle to warrant Liverpools interest next season.

No i included Morrientes in my little 'overview'. Nando as he's more commonly known as has still yet to show us his true ability, we all know he has the skill and quality but i also beleive he is struggling with the english pace of the game.
Crouch as you say is injured but he is a proven goal scorer and a fine header of the ball so lets hope that when he gets back he will show us why Rafa paid some 6 mill for him.
As for Cisse, don't get me wrong, i love watching him run at defenders and i do think he's a quality striker but i also believe his finnishing requires a bit more work, he's missed some sitters already this season and we need to be taking ALL the chances left open to us.

My thoughts and words were Rafa you fucking idiot you'll regret not buying him .Now I think he does regret not buying him.

Some 2 months down the line and i would say never a truer word said, still no goals from Crouch and you could count Nando's contribution on one hand. The only one who seems to be proving himself is Cisse yet he's so bloody wasteful, still missing the sitters.
