20/06/2005 Entry: "F1 farce"

I never got to see the US F1 yesterday but after everything i've read i'm glad i never, what a complete shambles with all but 3 teams, namely Ferrari, Minardi and Jordan boycotting the race.
It would seem that there were safety concerns expressed by Michelin about the track and the series of tyre blowouts in qualifying that they could not give an explanation for, the three teams that raced were on Bridgestones.
Whatever the issues are/were, it looks like the blame has been placed firmly at the feet of Michelin, most of the teams had asked for a temporary chicane to be installed ahead of the final turn to slow the cars down but the F1 officials AND Ferrari refused to sanction the proposals that lead to the mass boycott. It is not the first time Ferrari has refused to join the other teams in sanctions and agreements and continue to set themselves apart from the other teams, maybe it's an attitude of superiority.
Also of note is that originally all but Ferrari had agreed to boycott the race but when it came to it, Jordan decided to race which put Minardi 'in an impossible position' causing them to race as well...you could never call F1 a brotherhood could you.

One final observation is that my very first fathers day has passed without incident, Aaron got me a super huge yorkie bar and CD of ELO (yes, laugh if you must but i like them and your opinion on my music taste holds no weight with me).Happy belated fathers day to all you daddy's out there and especially to my dad who i yet again forgot to get a card for but will more than likely phone today rather sheepishly.

I watched the F1 GP mate, total shambles! Think the sport is done for in the USA now.

But to blame Ferrari is not really fair. Earlier in the season Ferrari expressed concerns about tyre wear at another track, and asked the other teams to lobby the FIA with them, and the Michelin runners refused. So its more a case of what goes around comes around here. Besides, why should Ferrari give up an advantage because their opponents made a technical error?

The blame for this one has to lie with Michelin themselves for supplying the wrong tyres, and for the FIA to refuse to budge over the teams proposals for the chicane. The Michelin runners had agreed to allow the Bridgestone guys to the front of the grid and then line up behind in qualifying order, but the FIA refused.

An example of how poor management can seriously damage a sports image.

I wasn't necessarily blaming Ferrari...just making a point that it's not the first time they have refused to co-operate.
I would wholly agree that the main blame stands at the feet of Michelin for supplying the wrong tyres and the FIA for completely miss managing the whole affair and making it virtually impossible for those teams to come up with a satisfactory plan, to allow a race of just 3 teams to continue in such a manner was ridiculous.
I doubt F1 will EVER recover in the US now
