20/05/2005 Entry: "3rd times a charm"
I got to see Star Wars III Revenge of the Sith yesturday...along with the wife as we managed to get someone to babysit Aaron and i have to say that i enjoyed it immensely.
Warning: Spoiler Alert
The darkest of all six films, it had some wonderfully choreographed fight scenes and Ian McDiarmid as Darth Sidious really hammed it up as the villain to wonderful affect, i was rather disappointed with General Grievous as he had so much potential to be a super villain but just seemed to run away all the time and was rather easily killed by Obi-Wan.
Count Dooku also never lasted long when he got into a fight with the now more powerful Anakin Skywalker and got his hands sliced off.
Perhaps the most disturbing part off the film was the systematic extermination of the Jedi's starting with Mace Windu and 4 other Jedi's when they went to arrest Chancellor Palpatine once they knew he was the Sith Lord...Palpatine easily dispatched the 4 Jedi's before his epic battle with Windu which Palpatine seemed to be losing and it was Anakins intervention at the end which cost Windu his life.
After that the clone armies previously loyal to the Jedi turned on their Jedi commanders and slaughtered them one by one as Anakin went into the Jedi Temple and killed all the young students (possibly the darkest and most distressing part of the film).
The final battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin..who had by now become a Sith apprentice and had been named Darth Vader by the now disfigured Palpatine was great and only when Obi-Wan gained the tactical advantage did Vader make his mistake that ended the battle leaving Vader virtually limbless and on fire from the lava he had slipped into.
As Obi-Wan left him to die, only Vader's rage kept him alive long enough for Darth Sidious to come to his rescue and save his life with the help of new robotic limbs, implants and the big black life support suit. The part where you see his mask being lowered onto his face is great, there is complete silence for a few seconds and then he starts to make that infamous breathing sound...pure class.
The film is wrapped up nicely with Padmé dieing in child birth after naming her children Luke and Leia, the children being split up to protect them as Leia goes to Alderaan as a member of the royal family and Luke is packed off to his family on Tatooine (which i'm sure Vader would have found quite easy to trace) with Obi-Wan hiding in exile nearby to watch over him and Yoda going into exile on Dagobah where he would wait for Luke when he was old enough.
All in all i think Lucas has redeemed himself somewhat with this last film and i believe it is as good as Empire Strikes Back...i'm sure many people would dispute this but i think you have to bare in mind that most of the people who have slated these new films are still stuck with the impressions of a youngster seeing what was at the time groundbreaking sci-fi....now as adults they go to see these new films with pre-conceived notions, opinions and ideology's of what the films should be like based on the youthful experience of the first 3 titans of cinematography and come away with overly critical side swipes.
It's entertainment, it's Lucas telling a story using the best technology he has available to him to get his vision across and yes, there are inconsistencies with the acting and continuity flaws between the first 3 and last 3 films but tell me any franchise that hasn't got them...enjoy them for what they are...an epic tale of pure entertainment.

No Chris, it hasnt been that long it just feels that way for you.
